Barefoot Slippers: How to Choose Wide-Toe Wool and Felt House Slippers
Barefoot slippers are house slippers built the way barefoot shoes are: room for the toes to spread, a thin and flexible sole, and nothing that squeezes the foot into a point. If you already wear barefoot shoes outdoors, a normal narrow slipper can feel cramped at home. This guide explains what to look for in barefoot slippers, compares the two wide-toe wool and felt models we stock from OmaKing, and helps you choose the right EU size.
What makes a slipper a barefoot slipper?
There is no official standard for the word "barefoot", so check the construction rather than the label. These are the points that matter:
- A wide toe area. The front of the slipper follows the shape of a foot, widest at the toes, so the toes are not pushed together.
- A thin, flexible sole. You should be able to bend the sole by hand. A thick, stiff sole works against the idea.
- A flat footbed. No raised heel compared with the toes.
- A closed heel or a secure fit. An open-back mule makes you grip with your toes to keep it on. A closed heel lets the foot relax.
- Natural, breathable materials. Wool and felt are breathable and keep feet warm in winter.
Our two barefoot slippers compared
Both models are handmade in Estonia by OmaKing, a small family company that has been making shoes since 1927, and both have a wider toe area for barefoot shoe wearers and wider feet. They differ in material, sole and how they go on.

OmaKing Barefoot Indoor Slippers
The Barefoot Indoor Slippers are made of natural felt inside and out: upper, lining and insole. The toe area is wider than on OmaKing's classic slippers, and leather details at the toe and around the opening stop the felt from stretching out of shape. The light rubber sole is flexible and non-marking, so it does not leave marks on wooden floors or tiles. Choose this model if you want a simple, all-natural felt slipper with a closed heel that stays on your foot.
Trolla Dots barefoot wool slippers
The Trolla Dots slippers have an upper in a dotted woollen textile and a lining of 100% sheep's wool, which gives them a soft, warm feel on cold floors. The insole is soft latex covered with wool, and a thin rubber outsole adds durability. A rubber section on top makes the slippers easier to put on, which helps people with a higher instep. They can be hand washed or machine washed at 30 °C on the wool cycle in a laundry bag. Choose Trolla if you want the softest, warmest wool feel or if you have a high instep.
How to choose the right size
A barefoot slipper only works if the toes have room, so take a minute to measure:
- Stand on a sheet of paper in the socks you wear at home and mark the tip of your longest toe and the back of your heel.
- Measure the distance in centimetres. Measure both feet and use the longer one.
- Compare the length with our size guide and pick the EU size where your toes still have a little space in front.
- For Trolla, go one size up if you want a looser fit, as the product page advises, because the wool lining takes up some space.
- If you are between two sizes, choose the bigger one. Toe room matters more than a snug fit in a barefoot slipper.
If the size is not right, you can return unworn slippers within 30 days with a prepaid return label.
Felt or wool textile: which is better for you?
Natural felt is dense and keeps its shape well, especially with the leather reinforcements on the Barefoot Indoor Slippers. It is the more structured choice and a good fit for people who walk a lot around the house. Woollen textile with a full sheep's wool lining, as on Trolla, feels softer and warmer from the first wear, and it can go in the washing machine on a wool programme. If you are unsure, think about your floors: on cold tiles the wool-lined Trolla is the cosier pick, on wooden floors in a heated home the felt model is often enough. Care tips
- Air the slippers regularly and let them dry fully between wears.
- Trolla: remove wool pilling with a pilling remover or a razor; wash by hand or at 30 °C on the wool cycle in a laundry bag with a wool detergent; air dry away from dryers, radiators and underfloor heating. Washing may affect the look of leather labels.
- Felt slippers: follow our step-by-step guide on how to wash felt slippers without shrinking them.
Who are barefoot slippers for?
Barefoot slippers suit people who already wear barefoot or wide-toe shoes and want the same feel at home, people with wider feet who find normal slippers tight at the front, and anyone who prefers a thin sole and natural materials indoors. They also make a practical winter gift; our gift guide for wool slippers and felt boots has more ideas.
